The cat is out of the bag

Jun 11, 2023Jun 11, 2023

Congratulations to Sally Stemen, a member of the Table Mountain Women’s Golf Club, for correctly naming the ghost writer who covered for me while I was out of the country several weeks ago. Stemen put it together and came up with, Derrick Schultz, PGA Professional at Butte Creek, who goes by the pen name of “Snoopy Towers,” get it? Charles Schultz (creator of Peanuts) and Towers (aka a Derrick), Pretty clever, at least I thought so. The bad news is she and her guest(s) will have to put up with me for 18 holes at Butte Creek, but lunch should make up for it.

A large field of guests and members participated in the Table Mountain Women’s Golf Club Friends and Guest Day tournament last week. The format was a two-player, one net best-ball.

First flight: Sandy Goble and Linda Arellano, 63; 2, Tracie Cvitkovich and Robin Smith, 66; 3, Janett Ott and Sue Osterholt, 67. Second flight: 1, Sherry Sue and Leslie Williams, 60 (low on the day); 2, Betty Horton and Sherri Hoon, 63; 3, Jolene Nixon and Debi McDermont, 64.

Third flight: 1, Jamie Myers and Cindy Krug, 64; 2, Deb Lerner and Sheila Kelly-Houston, 65; 3, Linda Mowell and Liz Mosher, 66. Member only flight: 1, Deb Miller and Sally Stemen, 62; 2, Dana Blanton and Jody Thompson, 65; 3, Liz Coleman and Elaine Thomas, 70. The Bidwell Park Women’s Golf Club counted only the middle 9 holes (5-13) for its weekly tournament.

Kelly MacKinnon was low gross in the first flight, and on the day, with a score of 81. Low net game was a tie at 38 between Debi McDermont and Becky Callas. Second flight low gross: Jill Circo, 91. Net game: 1, Jolene Nixon, 36.5; 2, Sandy Sample, 37.5. Third flight low gross, Liz Mosher, 103. Game: 1, Mowell, 36.5; 2, Susan Pease, 38. The team of Tami Blofsky, Jayne Bunting and Susie Westcott shot a blistering (score not temperature) 15 under par to win the Butte Creek Women’s Golf Club one best-ball, ABC format tournament for its weekly outing.

Taking second was the team of Karen Fearon, Joye Smith and Carol Varley with a score of 60. Shooting 61 for the third spot was the team of Val Gregory, Darlene Thomasson and a blind draw.

The Butte Creek Women will be starting their three-day club championship tournament today. Susan Martellaro will be trying to defend her title she captured last year in defeating the longest holder of the title, Debbie Maderos.

The 4th Annual Legacy Cup tournament at Butte Creek was held this past week.

Members played with a son/daughter, or any relative of their choosing. The Friday portion was a two- player scramble format in just the championship and open flights. The Saturday portion was a two-player, one best-ball format, divided into three flights. The Championship flight, an Open flight and a Future flight: The championship and open flights were generally comprised of older, or lower handicap players. The Future division was comprised of a junior player, 4-12 year-old, teamed with an older parent, grandparent, etc. The Future players played from the recently installed tee markers coinciding with the recommended distances for US Kids tournament yardages. It is a real joy watching the younger players receiving recognition for their efforts.

Championship flight scramble: 1, tie, Don Fowkes and Royal Hawkley along with Aaron Rogers and Billy Rogers, 32. Open flight: 1, Davis Rich and Craig McGovern, 31; 2, Alex Vasquez and Richard Vasquez, 32; 3, Greg Hukowicz and Jonas Hukowicz, 33. Championship flight best-ball: 1, Morgan Pittman and Eric Pittman, 65; 2, Chad Parker and Tanner Parker, 66; 3, tie, Nate Anderson and Ed Anderson, along with the team of Brandon Harris and Chuck Harris, 67. Open flight: 1, Matt Doyle and Brady Doyle, 66; 2, Rich and McGovern, 69; 3, tie, Vasquez and Vasquez, along with Art Gausemel and Coby Gausemel, 71.

The Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club counted only those holes beginning with the letters “S and T” for its weekly game and subtracted one-half a player’s handicap for the net score.

Linda Allen was low gross on the day with a nice round of 83. Allen and Linda Arellano tied for low net at 68. Game: 1, Arellano, 31.5; 2, Sophia Magana, 34; 3, Robin Smith, 35; 4, tie, Allen, Cathy Edgar and Shelley Carney, 35.5. Closest to pin on No. 3: 1, Smith; 2, Linda Alworth; 3, Magana.

Bidwell yielded a couple more aces recently. Henry Grey Brown scored a hole-in-one on the difficult 12th hole. Brown’s perfect 6-hybrid, 143-yard tee shot was witnessed by Kyle Glaziner and Jack Knowlton. This ace marks Brown’-s third career hole-in-one.

Cutis Huff followed suit on the 16th hole with a perfect 155-yard, 7-iron tee shot for his first ever hole-in-one. Huff’s playing companions, Roy Peters and A. J. Haggard attested to the ace.
